China’s Jiuquan Steel has embarked on a major programme which will upgrade its processes and equipment and restructure its products programme.

The project was launched at a signing ceremony held at the steel plant in Gansu Province.

CISDI is to build JISCO’s melting plant and a 4,200mm heavy plate rolling line to an EPC mode, in a bid to comprehensively improve smart, green manufacturing standards in its critical line and equipment, and also improve alignment of its product structure for the changing demands of the global steel market.

The chairmen of both companies, Mr Zijian Cheng of JISCO and CISDI’s Mr Xuewen Xiao, attended the signing ceremony, at which JISCO and CISDI’s programme stakeholders exchanged views on general planning and major preparations.

“This programme marks JISCO’s dynamic transition to smart, green and low-carbon developments,” commented Mr Xiao. “Both companies are at the beginning of a stronger partnership for future steel development.

“CISDI’s technical and management teams will be channeling their recent achievements in smart, green manufacturing and their wealth of experience in tech and equipment. They will transform JISCO’s melting and rolling plants into a star demo for China’s steel sector,” he added.

An appreciation of CISDI’s long-term support and devotion to JISCO and the huge challenges of the latest project was expressed by Mr Cheng. He commented: “This costly and demanding programme will run to a very tight schedule. There will be high standards to meet and complicated tasks to perform.

“It will be a huge challenge for all teams involved and a strong mechanism of collaboration, which will drive smooth communication and detailed information-sharing, is top of the agenda.

“With the support of CISDI’s vast experience and its expert teams, JISCO will find its way to advance with state-of-the-art solutions, well-controlled milestone plans and full-process quality assurance.”

To meet JISCO’s target of building streamlined, efficient and cost-effective melting and rolling plants, CISDI will work to a mutually-agreed general layout and a two-phase construction solution:

Phase 1 will focus on building a KR-process desulphurisation station, two 100 tonne BOFs, two ladle furnaces, a 7-strand billet caster, a single-strand slab caster, a 4,200mm heavy plate rolling line plus utilities, and an 80,000m3 LDG holder.

Phase 2 will see the building of a dual-high-speed bar rolling line and its utilities.

JISCO’s projected hot commissioning target is the end of May 2025 for the steelmaking and continuous casting plants, and the end of September 2025 for the heavy plate rolling line.
